Nutrition:
Plants and partly carnal food (insects)
Habitat:
Metrioptera saussureana inhabits dwarf-shrub, pastures, meadows, edges and similar locations between about 1000 and about 2500m above sea level.
Life cycle:
The adults usually spend their time close to the ground and can be observed from July to October.
Endangerment factors:
Metrioptera saussureana is particularly at higher elevations only slightly endangered.
Remarks:
The distribution extends from the Pyrenees to the western and Southern Alps (to the northeast to about Vorarlberg). Metrioptera saussureana is also found in the Vosges and in the southern Jura (Switzerland, France). In Germany the grasshopper is apparently missing entirely.
Hints on determination:
The best features are the combination of broadly rounded forewing tips and missing or faint black stripes on the hind femur.
