Hypena crassalis (Fabricius, 1787)

Host plants:
The caterpillar lives on Vaccinium species, especially Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry).

Habitat:
Hypena crassalis inhabits shady, undergrowth rich, coniferous and mixed forests on acid soil with Vaccinium species and is often found in the mountains.

Life cycle:
The moths fly depending on the altitude and latitude from mid-May to August in a single generation (if even more possible?). The caterpillar lives from late June to October. I found numerous half-grown to mature larvae in early October 2010 in the Black Forest at 1000m above sea level on Vaccinium myrtillus. The pupa overwinters.

Remarks:
Hypena crassalis is distributed mainly in central and Eastern Europe (Southern Scandinavia to Central Italy, Pyrenees to the Caucasus).
