Host plants:
The caterpillar lives principally on poplars (Populus tremula).
Habitat:
Archiearis notha colonizes softwood-rich woodlands, riparian forests and wetlands.
Life cycle:
The moths hibernate fully developed in the pupal case. They hatch in early spring from mid-February through April. The caterpillar lives between spun leaves.
Endangerment: endangered
Endangerment factors:
Softwood is still eliminated by the forestry as economically worthless. Floodplains have been almost completely destroyed, and the surviving remnants degenerate further (ground water drawdown, eutrophication).
Remarks:
The distribution reaches from Spain to Japan.
