Host plants:
The larvae are polyphagous in the herb layer, according to literature often on Urtica.

Habitat:
Autographa excelsa inhabits humid, bright places in boreal woodlands.

Life cycle:
The moths occur between July and September. The larva hibernates.

Remarks:
Autographa excelsa occurs in Europe only in the northeastern parts from S-Finland and the Baltic countries. An isolated population group exists in SE-Poland in the Tatra mountains. The moth's main distribution is located in more northern parts of Asia to Japan.

Hints on determination:
Autographa excelsa is similar to Autographa bractea. The golden spot is in most cases more rounded and smaller.
