Host plants:
The caterpillar lives mainly on Artemisia species (Asteraceae).

Habitat:
Protoschinia scutosa inhabits dry and warm places and is a character species of the Artemisia-steppes. I found caterpillars in Northern Greece south of Florina at very hot, dry slopes.

Life cycle:
The moths fly in several generations from spring to fall and are likely to be found throughout the year in north Africa. The caterpillars also rest in the sunshine at the Artemisia shoots and are betrayed by grazed shoots.

Remarks:
Protoschinia scutosa occurs in the warm regions of the Holarctic (North America, north Africa, Southern Europe, southern and Central Asia to Japan). Further north (Central Europe), Protoschinia scutosa occurs occasionally as a rather rare vagrant.
