Host plants:
The caterpillars live initially on oaks (Quercus), but change in the course of their development most often in the herbaceous layer.

Habitat:
Conistra erythrocephala inhabits oak-rich forests, especially in warm regions.

Life cycle:
The moths fly overwintering from August/September to early May. The caterpillars live from mid-April to June.

Endangerment factors:
Conistra erythrocephala is indeed endangered weakly to moderately north of the Alps by the decrease in warm oak forests in favour of monocultures (pine, spruce, beech, maple, etc.), but seems to spread a bit at the moment probably due to global warming.

Remarks:
Conistra erythrocephala occurs from north west Africa across Southern and Central Europe to Turkey. To the north, it reaches even Denmark. Further north there are only rare records.
